Mark Patrick McElwee
My 1st Cousin 3X Removed
- Birth: July 9, 1898 (Mount Carmel, PA)
- Death: July 31, 1947 (Hanover, PA)
- Buried: St. Mary’s Cemetery (Mount Carmel, PA)
Note: “Father Mark” was a pastor/priest at a church in Hanover, PA. He is named on this monument along with nine other clergy members. From what I can discern, here is some information on the markings:
- Seven men are listed as “Reverend” (including Mark)
- One is listed as “Reverend Monsignor”
- One is listed as “Right Reverend Monsignor” and V.G. which means “Vicar General”
- One is listed as “Right Reverend Monsignor” and V.F. which means “Vicar Forane”
- One has the suffix J.C.D., which means Juris Canonici Doctor, or “Doctor of Canon Law.”
Each one of the men named here also has their own grave a few yards away from here. His headstone says “requiescat in pace,” which is Latin for the prayer to “rest in peace.”

Gerald Francis McElwee
My 1st Cousin 3X Removed
- Birth: April 13, 1900 (Mount Carmel, PA)
- Death: February 10, 1951 (Kulpmont, PA)
- Buried: St. Mary’s Cemetery – Church of the Holy Angels (Kulpmont, PA)
Note: Gerald and his wife Stella were the only family members I found in the other St. Mary’s cemetery. There are two of them just a few miles apart, and this second cemetery had lots of Polish names, Italian names, and other names from what appeared to be Eastern European nations. I believe the reason why he’s the only one in the family laid to rest here is because his wife was Polish, which may have meant there was some sort of separation or segregation from the rest of the family, perhaps both in life and in death.
